“I am looking for 3 really smart people to help me,” I said as Hugs the Clown.
I was doing a gospel magic show for a church vacation bible club.
“The blond girl with braids and a purple shirt would you like to help?”
“The boy with blue overalls and a red shirt would you like to help, too? Great, come on up.”
“Also Mrs. Phillips you were so kind to invite me I could use your help too.”
“Everyone please stand next to me and I will show you this official eye chart and I will check your vision.”
I show the audience an eye chart with the letters from large to small.
“I would like for you to read this line please.” They all proceed to say each letter, “LPED.”
“Now please read the line near the bottom.” Again they read, “EDFCZP.” I then tell the children, ”You two did such a good job you may sit down now.”
“Mrs. Phillips I would like for you to read what you see, please.”
She says,”I can’t see a thing.”
I show the audience the eye chart, then say,” I will help you with my special glasses.”
I get out a pair of glasses with springy eyeballs and put them on her. The audience laughs. I ask her to read it again and she still says, ”I can’t see a thing.” I do this a couple more times with more silly glasses.
I ask her, “Please read what you see.”
She says,”Come a little closer.” I get real close. I show the audience the same eye chart. Then have her read again. “No, a little farther.” I show the audience again the chart then have her read what she sees, “No closer.” We do this a few times.
I put the glasses away as the audience is really hollering and laughing. I then say, ”I know you can see just fine so please read what you see now.”
“Without a vision, the people perish.” Proverbs 29:18
“Mrs. Phillips I think what that means is if we don’t see things the way God does, we get into trouble.” She agrees and sits down.
I have always enjoyed performing that routine, and I am reminded that it is important to have not just an idea of what I want in life, but what is God’s idea and desire or vision for my life.
Where do we get our desires and visions? What or who influences us? We have lots of people giving us ideas; our parents, teachers, heroes in sports and music. When I grew up we had movies and books. Reading biographies of famous people who had accomplished much over many obstacles inspired me.
In our modern times, we have lots of electronic marvels. They have become very important and useful in our lives. Television, computers, smartphones, social media and more. We used to watch the news to inform us about what is happening in our community and around the world. But for many years now it seems the news and the social media which is 24/7 tries to form our opinions to their liberal ideas. What we see is greed, hate, violence, arrogance, lies, and promoting any sexual behavior as OK. Is this what we want to influence the vision of our lives?
We have moved away from the influence of the church, God’s word, and His truth. It has come to a point where the world’s vision has hijacked things like decency, kindness, goodness, patience, truth, forgiveness and gentleness.
Are you a follower of Jesus and His Gospel? Do you have a sincere desire to know His plan and vision for your life? It is a challenge but with sincere prayer and seeking to know Him and His word, I believe He will show you His vision for you. It will be better than any plan that you may think of on your own. Gods ways are Higher than our ways, His thoughts higher than our thoughts. He is the creator of all things.
When we stand for righteousness and truth as we walk in His Truth, we will have persecution and trials. But Jesus says be of good cheer for He has overcome this world. The Joy of the Lord is your strength.
