In the waiting room in the clinic I had to stop everything I would otherwise be doing, remaining in this chair until the nurse called me in to the exam room. In expectation of my visit with the doctor, I had to wait some more in the exam room, resting there in expectation of her knock on the door.
I thought of several times in the Bible that the Lord instructs us to wait, but I dwelt on this verse:
Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD! Psalm 27:14 NKJV
What does it mean to wait on the Lord? Certainly, it means staying or resting in expectation of His presence and His answer to prayer and setting aside normal routine activities in this expectation.
In my case, waiting meant I had to remain stationary, anticipating the arrival of the doctor.
But this word, wait, has another meaning.
Aaron and his sons waited on their priest’s office. Numbers 3, 8. Romans 12.
To be ready to serve; to obey. Psalm 25. Proverbs 20.
To wait at, to attend in service; to perform service at. 1 Corinthians 9.
In these scriptures the verb, to wait, is not about sitting still, it is about moving, working, serving. The servers at a restaurant are called the wait staff. Sometime ago a server was called a waiter or a waitress. Obviously, their job is not one of sitting still!
Isaiah 40:31, a verse often quoted, says:
But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. (NKJV)
I believe this means sitting still until I hear from Him but also serving Him in whatever area He has called me. As I serve Him with what He has made plain in His Word, I am strengthened and encouraged to go further with Him. I will serve Him with my whole heart and be strengthened by that activity.
Takeaway: As we wait on the Lord, serve Him and labor in His fields, He renews our strength. The more we do for Him, the more we can do for Him.
