One day I was sitting in the car with Ev while her dad was in the store. We were chatting and then out of the blue she said, “I really miss Grandpa.” She was six years old at the time.
“I miss him too, honey,” I said. My husband had only recently passed away and my wounds were still fresh and raw. Though I tried to hold back my emotions, I couldn’t talk about him without tears flowing. We continued our conversation and I tried to hide my emotions from my granddaughter. It didn’t work.
Ev was sitting in the backseat and I don’t know if she heard me snuffling or if she heard my voice cracking as we talked. Something clued her in. She knew something wasn’t right. “Grandma, what’s wrong,” she asked.
“I miss Grandpa very much,” I answered. Ev climbed into the front seat with me.
Kneeling in the seat beside me, she placed her hands on each side of my tear-stained face. Tears had welled up in her eyes too. “Don’t be sad Grandma. I love you so much.” She wrapped her arms around me and hugged me tightly.
In my granddaughter's off-kilter world, she recognized my sadness and reacted perfectly. She responded in love.
What Evony lives with every day, most people only have to experience once in a while. There are times when life is off-center. We stumble for whatever reason and veer off the straight path. Our vision becomes clouded and we lose sight of the plan and our purpose. We lose our way.
How easily we forget whom we love and how much Jesus loves us. It’s times like this, when life is askew, that we need Him the most. Remember whom you love and serve. Focus your eyes on Him alone and your Savior will respond with His perfect love. He will center your life once again.
“Let thine eyes look right on, And let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Make level the path of thy feet, And let all thy ways be established.” Proverbs 4:25-26 (ASV)
