Little Mikey, was a small boy with an ambitious sense of adventure, hence, this “Tea Party” with his two younger sisters was getting old. Having already humiliated him by painting his nails and applying rouge, they started on him with lipstick. That was his limit! After all, lipstick not only made him look girlie, it tasted awful. How could all those silly girls want to do that every day? Shaking his head, he knew then, he would never be able to understand the girlie mind.
Grabbing a towel and a chocolate cupcake, Little Mikey ran out the back door and into the crisp fall night. Hot on the trail of adventure, the first order of business was to wipe off all that girlie silliness and eat his cupcake. The family dog barked for attention, but Little Mikey’s mind would not be distracted. With a mind whirling with possibilities, it was tough to decide on what to explore.
The night was silent and that could only mean that his friends were already doing homework (yuck)! Proud that he had avoided capture, he suspected that they were now behind locked doors and chained to their desks. Given those points, it would be up to him to find the fun tonight! When he became President, he would outlaw homework imprisonment! He’d teach those teachers a thing or two!
There was so much pent-up energy within him, he felt as if he just might explode. Snickering to himself, surely that would teach those teachers a lesson. Holding one’s breath does not affect them, but maybe an exploding boy would! Everybody knows a boy, should not have homework, there’s too much else to do that is so much more fun.
Approaching the swing set, he wondered if he could swing so high that the chain would wrap around and around the top bar. Swinging his legs as hard as he could, he tried his best, but it wasn’t happening. Quickly changing plans, he jumped off, and while soaring through the air, imagining himself as Superman flying to his next exploit. Screaming damsels needing rescue and villains needing conquering were hard to find, consequently, after a few minutes, playing Superman did not seem fun. Moping around in utter misery and youthful self-pity, he plopped down and lay back on the grass. The dog licking his face gave a brief respite from the misery, but could not hold the interest of a bored little boy for long.
He glanced upwards and did something he might not have ever done before, he took notice of the sky. It was full of twinkling stars! Astonished, he wondered why they twinkled. In the last cowboy movie he watched, the Indians used smoke to send signals. Last night he watched a show where battleships used flashing lights for communication. Suddenly, a revelation hit him like a lightning bolt. He about wet his britches when he realized that Martians were sending him messages!
Running into the garage, he grabbed dad’s flashlight – the one with the switch AND a button that made it flicker. He pointed the flashlight to the sky and with difficulty, signaled what he thought was, “H-e-l-l-o-, I a-m M-i-k-e.” Repeating the signal, he was hoping a Martian would see it and answer. For good measure, he even signaled to a passing jet just to see if it would respond.
Lowering the flashlight, he searched the sky, expectant that secret messages awaited him. The stars seemed very talkative that night. Unfortunately, so talkative it was all a big jumble and impossible to decipher. Looking up after writing down a few letters, he could not find the same star he had just observed. In spite of the excitement, his mind wandered a little. Last Sunday his teacher told him God was up in heaven looking down on us. Now, he wondered whether God was seeing his signal.
The Scene changes to Heaven.
Looking down on his creation, God is suppressing a small chuckle. Yes, Little Mikey, I see your signal and yes, I know who you are. Remember what else your Sunday school teacher said? I knew you before you were born.
