TITLE: The Corner Chair | Previous Challenge Entry

“Of course,” Jesus replied. And off they went.
Opening the front door of the small cottage they found several rooms off of the main room. Each appeared to be alike but different. His curiosity aroused, the man timidly stepped over the threshold of the first room and looked around alone. The room was non-descript except for the magnificent chair in the center covered in dazzling jewels. Blinded he turned around, backed up and tried to sit. The chair collapsed through a hole in the ground. Just like that the chair in all its glory was gone. Thankfully he was still standing above the hole.
The next room was also non-descript except for the chair in the center. This chair was made of colorful ribbons. The most beautiful chair he had ever seen. It looked comfortable and used the latest technology for what promised to be a cozy place to relax. But again, just as he approached the chair to sit something strange happened. A torrent of water came from out of nowhere and once the chair was soaked the ribbons unraveled and the gadgets shorted out. Time to move on.
The chair in the center of the room next door was built from several religious symbols. A collection of this and that from different religions and gods all glued together. He picked up a familiar possession and once again the chair crashed littering the floor with several holy books and objects. Embarrassed he closed the door and moved on.
Diplomas, degrees and other tokens of power and status greeted him in the form of yet another chair. Whoever lived in this room obviously did not see or know how precarious the chair looked. But wait a moment. That was his alma mater! Stumbling backwards his heel just barely clipped the bottom of the chair and it splintered. So much for that.
Moving on, he approached the next room and found a chair made out of slips of paper. They looked like they were not even glued but just thrown together in an attempt to make a place to sit. Drawing near he read a few of the pieces and discovered they were names of people. Some of them were famous while others were not. What was his mother’s name doing here? And his hero? What did all this mean? While he was pondering these things a strong wind came from behind and the names floated away in all directions.
Exhausted, and still not able to rest anywhere in the house, he approached the final room and without any thought sat on the chair in the corner. A moment later he realized that this chair had not collapsed, disappeared or broke. Another look and he understood it was actually the simplest and sturdiest chair in the house. And what was it doing in the back corner? All the other chairs had been front and center like they were trying to get attention. This one was different and not just because of the way it looked or its placement in the room. Although this chair did not look like much it had held him when all the others had failed. Too tired to think anymore he fell asleep.
In the midst of his deep slumber he was aroused by a gentle hand on his shoulder. Jesus had entered and was beckoning him to leave the house to continue their walk through the garden. Refreshed from his nap he went.
“What do the chairs mean?” the man asked Jesus directly before they even left the house.
“Well, everything and everyone you trust in in your life will fail you. From the grandest riches to your mother they all flounder. But I will never fail you. It is only in me that you will find the peace and rest you so desire.”
“Wow. That is a fascinating story Grandpa,” little Timmy squeaked. “Did you really see Jesus? What did he look like?”
“It was a dream Timmy. An unforgettable one. I have chosen to live my life and make my choices based on what I learned and Jesus has never let me down. Will you choose to trust Him?”
“Yes, Grandpa. Oh, yes. I will trust Jesus, the corner chair.”
