“So why do you want to be a stock broker?”
“What can you bring to the team?”
“How would you exceed our clients’ expectations?”
The interview questions came measured but clipped with an air of arrogance as the interviewer read from a prepared list.
Kevin remembered his assertive demeanour that day and even though he didn’t have memory of his actual answers, it was enough to set him on the journey that became his life.
He’d become a minion of sorts, doing the hard yards and somehow earning his due predicting the future. An adult playing real life Monopoly while gathering the inevitable client fees- until it all became too real.
For years to come Kevin would ponder over what he should have done that day. Replaying the conversation over and over was going to slowly drive him insane but stopping wasn't an option.
“Surely you know?”
“Just a minute mate. I need to run some figures.”
“I’m not your mate. Make a decision. I don’t have all day!”
“Hang on. I’m checking.” Kevin felt the sweat pool in his lower back.
“I pay you for a quick decision Kevin. If the market’s going down any further, I want out!”
“Ok … Sell.”
“Fine. Get it done.”
When it was over. Kevin finally let out the breath he’d been holding.
“Kevin? Kevin?”
“I’m here, what is it?”
“The market’s gone north.”
Kevin felt the hairs on his neck bristle. “By how much?”
“15%.”
“Can’t be that much. Are you sure it’s not 1.5? It’s been going south for months.”
“Yep. Who’d have thought? Shame that last client of yours missed joining the millionaires club. I wonder what made him sell everything?”
