I can’t believe my luck. Or maybe it’s more than luck.

Three times now I’ve shared the company of this intriguing woman, if you include our first encounter. And to think, if I hadn’t clumsily slopped my coffee on her that day, I would have walked right past her without a glance and completely missed all this. That ridiculous smirk has crept back on my face. I can feel it. In all honesty, it's hard to comprehend this is actually taking place. She is nothing like the women in my world. In my line of work I’m surrounded with many beautiful, intelligent women; some truly wonderful. Yet this fascinating woman, how has she already managed to stoke my very soul? There’s something about her simple, peaceful ways. She has my complete attention. Well, maybe not this very second.

She’s laughing again. I obviously missed something but I smile wider anyway. Her laugh is glorious. There’s a rich sense of freedom in it. She makes a comment that draws my attention to our surroundings. Ah, we’ve arrived at the point we go our separate ways. My heart’s rhythm speeds up. I still haven’t managed to create another way to cross paths again and I want to make sure that happens. I need to before she begins her farewell.

She’s hesitating. Her bright eyes are avoiding mine and she’s fidgeting with her sun kissed hair.

“Once again your company has enthralled me,” I daringly admit with overt flair, “I am loathe that we must part ways here.” That makes her smile and draws her eyes to mine. Oh, I could kiss her. The thought forges the desire into my being. I want to kiss her. Would it be too presumptuous to kiss her?

She’s reciprocating the delight in the afternoon we’ve shared. I laugh as she teases me again. I make a cheeky remark and she mocks offense before laughing again. I inhale a sweet scent and realise, with a stutter of breath, that we’re closer. I don’t know who moved but I know I would only need to lean forward to kiss her now. I’m aware of every breath cycling through my lungs and the increasing strength at which my heart beats. Would she let me kiss her?

She’s beginning to avert her eyes again. I’m probably staring. I’ve been told my gaze can be intense. As our eyes meet again I purposefully smile and watch it reflect on her face. Don’t waste this moment, man! Be brave. Just for this moment be brave.

My body must be more in tune with my heart than my head is. It’s already begun to lean toward her. I only decide not to rush. This shouldn’t be stolen. She’s holding her ground. As I slowly draw closer her face tilts up in slight increments. I pause briefly then ease my face toward hers anticipating the soft connection of…

She turned her face away. Oh rock, hide me! She turned her face away.

I’m frozen, my lips awkwardly close to her ear. My heart is hammering in confusion. I went too fast. Or too far. Oh, I’m an idiot! Have I read her completely wrong?

“I don’t think I know you well enough for that yet,” she whispers. Relief releases some of my doubts and I’m able to process that she hasn’t moved either. Frantically I search for an adequate response. With a calm that belies my remaining tension, I question her quietly.

“Enough to give me your number?”

I straighten as she leans back and looks me in the eyes.

“I think that would be perfectly suitable,” she answers smiling. I immediately pull my phone out and enter the number she gives me. I press a button and hold it to my ear. She looks at me questioningly and then gives me a curious glare as her phone begins to ring. She answers it.

“My fine lady,” I begin, standing face to face with her, “I just want to notify you that I shall be calling you in the next few days so that we may allot another time for sharing company.” She smiles broadly. It’s contagious.

“Very good. I shall anticipate it with eagerness, kind sir.”

I swiftly step back and grandly give a full bow. One quick glance at her glowing smile and I swivel and depart while the moment is perfect.
