Now, what was that story? My mind reaches after fleeting images… a dusky pink cup ringed with gold, delicate, round as a bowl…Surely a cup from a painting somewhere…Now I picture a squared-off saucer, with bold, bright blue and green flowers, a splash of yellow here and there. The cup’s ear is black too, a striking colour against the white china. This one is real, and my mother still has it. It is Japanese, I think…What did Mum say? Why didn’t I listen better!
But stronger still is a childhood story that remains just out of reach - about a gift that a child saved for, a cup and saucer, one of delicate china, with lovely flowers on it; and of how the gift, once bought, broke before it could be given; and the child had to save up, all over again… The story remains elusive, matching no favourite author or tale I can bring to mind…
The memory remains like a saucer without its cup, incomplete, yet still satisfying in its lessons about beauty and perseverance and grace. Perhaps you, dear reader, have the matching cup. Perhaps we can complete the picture together…
