“There is contamination in the well,” he announced. “We must not use water from this well until the source of the contamination is found. I know that will be a hardship, it is five miles to the next well, but if you drink this water it will make you very sick.”
Faces fell as this news sank in. How could this be? There were strict rules about keeping the well water clean, and the spring that was the source of water was fenced and guarded. Water was vital for life, and they couldn’t afford for this to happen.
Anna pouted; she knew she would be the one to make the long trek to fetch water. Her little brother was too small, and her older brother was helping in the fields, he couldn’t be spared. Her father was dead, and her mother would send her, she knew.
The chief continued as the villagers listened in dismay.
On Sunday morning the Pastor preached on the same subject. He thundered his message to the gathered people as they sat around on the sandy ground.
“We’ve all been affected by our problems this week with the water supply,” he said. “Somehow the water got contaminated. Some of you have been drinking it in spite of our warnings, and you have become sick. Some of you have had to make the long trek to the next well, which is time-consuming and difficult. It is not easy to root out the problems after they have happened. This is why we try to prevent them by making rules and putting a fence around the spring to guard it.” He looked around at his people.
“That is why God warned us in Proverbs to guard our hearts,” he continued. “‘Guard your heart for out of it is the wellspring of life’. Put a fence around your heart. Don’t let the rubbish of the world get in. Don’t feed your mind with trash and rotten things. Keep your heart pure, and you will have a pure life that is pleasing to God.”
Anna listened and thought of her long, tiring trek to the neighbouring well. Yes, she could see the parallel. The water was unusable because of the rubbish that was put in the supply. She would not be useful to God if she let rubbish into her life.
“O God,” she prayed. “Guard my heart and keep it clean. Put a fence around my mind to keep the rubbish out so I can be useful to you. Amen.”
