Each soul that ever lived has stood there…on the brink of eternity. Any moment we might hear our own name called, and our only choice is to go. The segment of life called time will end, but we will continue living forever. Our eternal destiny is our own responsibility and must be chosen before this life has ended.
A recent trip across the United States portrays the aspect of leaving one home for another, as we travelled to visit our daughter and her family in South Dakota. Our adult son, the favorite uncle of the children, chose to go along. He and my husband took turns at the wheel so we could drive the thousand miles plus, straight through.
Plugging in the Garmin to help us stay on the right course was the easy part. Staying awake all night, fighting the high winds, and the monotony of driving straight west in the darkness for hundreds of miles was a challenge. Several times we stopped for coffee or tea and stretched our stiff legs, enabling us to continue travelling steadily.
The darkness faded as the morning skies awakened to the rising sun. We discussed the view which looked dreadfully bare to our son who is a landscaper. We wondered why anyone chose to live in this part of the country. We talked about pioneers who made the journey west with so little beauty to entice them, especially considering the hardships they endured.
In one instant that all changed. Suddenly! I gasped at the beauty all around us as we entered the Badlands of South Dakota. I grabbed my camera and snapped one shot after another. The rolling hills stretched out with the early morning skies casting a white haze across the horizon. The black trees and gigantic rocks were a refuge for beautiful deer that graced the deep crevices. Frozen ponds glistened in the beauty of remaining winter snow. Each moment we drove presented greater thrills of grandeur.
Those thrills faded when we reunited with our family. The hugs and kisses were priceless. Smiles of welcome, the younger children climbing all over us, and the teens sharing details of their individual lives in a new ‘country’ filled our hearts with incredible joy.
I thought of eternity. News of world-wide devastation makes the headlines daily. Our trials seem small in comparison.
Yet our personal trials are just as real and extremely hard when they hit us in the face. Sometimes we wonder where God is in the dark times of our lives. We can’t see His hand in the struggles and heartaches as He teaches us another lesson in living by faith. We become un-plugged in that faith forgetting His promise, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” We used the Garmin in the dark hours of travelling to keep us on track. Trusting Christ in the dark hours of time keeps us on course as we head towards Heaven. Our eternal destination is determined simply by trusting Him.
For each soul who has trusted Christ, the darkness of this life will soon fade. If we live to be one hundred or older, our time here is a mere breath compared to eternity. The doors of eternity will open revealing the beauty of that heavenly home that we cannot comprehend in our human minds. We’ll walk on streets of gold, sit by the crystal sea and eat fruits from trees that never die as we stroll through Heaven with loved ones who already made that journey.
We will behold our Saviour and look into His sweet face. His eyes of love will welcome us to Heaven as He wraps His tender arms around us, reminding us that we are His for all eternity. ***************************************************************************
Our Father God has invited everyone to spend eternity with Him. He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins, paying the price in full for our eternal destiny. If you have not placed your trust in Him, please consider the consequences. The only alternative is to spend eternity without Him in a place called Hell, living, but forever dying in the lake of fire. He didn’t prepare this place for mankind. He prepared it for angels who disobeyed Him. However, He is a just God. If we fail to accept Him, the choice for eternity is already made.
