I asked, “Have you ever felt like this before?” He answered, “Yes, I have felt like this many times when I’ve been playing sports. It isn’t anything to be worried about.”
He times past, he was always reluctant to go to a doctor so I didn’t suggest that. I mentally started preparing for a trip to the doctor by thinking where the insurance information was and who to get to watch the kids.
About that time, he had what appeared to be some sort of seizure. When I couldn’t get him to respond to me, I called for an ambulance and then called my next door neighbor and hollered for help. We started CPR. The medics arrived and took over.
My neighbor drove me to the hospital and her husband took care of the kids. When I arrived at the hospital, they ushered me into a room and said the doctor would be there shortly. He came in and told me that my husband was gone. He had a massive heart attack. This was the darkest day of my life.
Several months later, I had a bowling friend that was becoming increasingly important to me. He worked shift work and told me to call him when I wasn’t able to sleep at night. I wandered around my house after getting the kids to sleep when I found that I, myself, could not sleep. Then one night I did call my friend and we talked for a long time. You know, there aren’t many people you can call in the middle of the night just to chat because you cannot sleep!
As time went on, my friend and I spent more time together and eventually married. My new husband practiced the quote in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world.” He was definitely a light to me in my hours of darkness. I had climbed out of the dark hole I was in and now was able to see the light again.
