Entering the youth room, Amy looked around for Mrs. H before finally spotting her. “Mrs. H, I really need to talk to you and Mr. H about something very important.”
Mandy and Joe Hansen were popular youth directors at St. John’s, the kids loved them and felt comfortable talking to them whenever they were troubled. Mandy and Joe became known as Mr. and Mrs. H to all of the regulars.
Mandy looked up from her lesson and immediately noticed Amy’s troubled look. She usually entered the room with her entourage in tow, but tonight was different. Amy was alone and she seemed less confident than usual.
“Sure, Joe and I will be around, you can help us clean up. Then we can talk,” Mandy said, as she mentally tossed a quick prayer up to God for wisdom.
After youth group Amy began to pick up the Bibles and stack them on shelves while Mandy and Joe folded chairs and placed them on the cart.
Joe began, “Amy, why don’t we sit down right now and you can tell us what is on your mind.”
Amy purposefully grabbed a chair that was off to the side while the couple sat on the loveseat. That is what she loved about this pair, they weren’t ashamed of the love they shared and were very open with the kids in youth group. They taught about abstinence and how important it is to stay pure; a fact that made this confession so difficult for Amy.
“I am pregnant!” Amy blurted. “I know that I am disappointing you and letting down this group, not to mention my family.”
Joe squeezed his wife’s hand as he spoke first, “Do your parents know yet?”
“Yes” said Mandy, “they were really cool. Of course they are disappointed and told me so, but they also let me know that they are going to help me through this.”
Mandy responded by getting up from her chair and moving to Amy’s side. She knelt down on the carpet beside the trembling child and pulled her into a big hug.
“Have you thought about what you are going to do?” asked Mandy. “Do you have a plan yet? Is the father aware of the baby?”
Amy looked up and said, “Yes, that is what I wanted to talk to both of you about. We realize that having sex was a huge mistake; getting married would only compound our trouble.” Amy took a breath and continued, “Abortion is not an option. I want to put the child up for adoption, and the father agrees with this decision.”
The pregnant girl turned to Joe and said, “Remember when you shared last week that your sister and her husband can’t have children that they are been preparing to enter the adoption process?”
“Yes,” said Joe. “I asked all of you to pray for them”
Amy added, “When you told us about them last week my heart began to beat so fast. I have been praying about this and I think that maybe God is answering prayers right now.”
Joe choked up. He had been praying for his sister, Jada, and her husband, Bill for years. Their numerous attempts at fertilization had been unsuccessful. I have been asking God to reveal to them how He wanted them to begin their family.” He added.
Mandy moved back to her husband’s side and looked at him and asked, “Do you think God is moving?”
Looking up at Amy he said, “Amy, are you asking us to contact Jada and Bill to see if they would be willing to pray about this?”
Tears began to fall as she nodded and then began to sob silently. The fact that God might be preparing to work so big in all of their lives was humbling.
Jada and Bill were excited when they received the phone call and eagerly agreed to pray for Amy and about the possibility of adopting her unborn child!
As it turned out, God was moving. Six months later Amy gave birth to a beautiful little boy. Jada and Mandy were in the delivery room with Amy while Bill and Joe were in the waiting room praying, pacing and praising!
It was obvious that God was moving and miracles were happening. This rough beginning was having a happy ending.
