“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”
The Statue of Liberty has long been our symbol for U.S.A. freedom, new beginnings and prosperity. Since 1876 she has stood proudly, inviting all to come and experience a new life and she has remained faithful to her promises.
However, a quick look at a newspaper, or a momentary listen to a newscast will cause you to question her claims. Financial crisis, bailouts, economic down turns, riots, murders, homelessness, hunger, wars and the list goes on. Has she in fact made promises that she cannot deliver? My answer to that question is a resounding, NO!
The U.S.A. is still the most prosperous, most generous, most welcoming country in the world. The U.S.A. is still a place of unprecedented opportunity, of unimagined creativity, of unsurpassed ingenuity and of unapologetic honesty and integrity. We, the people of the U.S.A., are the brightly shinning flame that is held by the “Lady in the harbor”, still inviting all to come and join us in this epic journey.
No matter what the naysayer may proclaim, the U.S.A. is still a Christian nation. We are a band of millions who proudly proclaim “In God We Trust” and will do so until we step into eternity. We understand with our hearts and with our minds that beautiful statues and eloquent poems are not our savior, but instead we have found and embraced the truth that Jesus is our Savior. He is “the way, the truth and the life and no one comes to The Father except through Him”. We understand that true freedom can only be found in Him. We celebrate the fact that “God shed His grace” on the U.S.A. and that we are the blessed recipients of that graciousness. And we are grateful.
There may be days of fatigue, poverty, wretchedness, homelessness and temptation, but from “sea to shining sea” we are alive with hope. We are beacons, we are salt and light and we are the smell of fresh baking bread. We are the U.S.A. and we will endure.
