“What’s this, Grandpa? It looks like a treasure chest.”
Grandpa turned from the fireplace he was decorating to look at David. “That is a special replica of the first Christmas gifts.” Grandpa sat on the couch behind David. “Let me tell you about how special they were.”
David used both hands to carefully set the box on the coffee table. “Can I open it?”
“Go ahead. You have heard the story about the three wise men that brought gifts to Jesus?”
“Yes, sir, my Sunday school teacher told us about it.”
“They gave Jesus three different gifts. All of them were rare, precious, and expensive during that time. Each one represented a role that Jesus would fill.”
David unlatched the chest and opened the lid. “This looks like a piece of gold. Grandpa, am I right?”
“Yes, David, that is gold. The wise men presented it to Jesus, to honor Him with the very best they possessed. They were also recognizing Him as their King.”
“What is this one?” David asked.
“That is frankincense. It’s highly fragrant when burned. They used it in Bible times as incense to offer to God.”
“So, why did they give it to Jesus?”
“They were offering Him incense as their God. “
“And this last one?”
“Well, David, that is myrrh. It was also very valuable, and had a very special meaning. They used it for different things, like perfume and ointment. It has a very bitter taste. The drink they tried to give Jesus on the cross was wine mixed with myrrh. He refused it because he had already drunk the bitter cup of suffering by submitting to His father’s will. The myrrh was a gift to acknowledge that Jesus came to the world as a man to suffer and die for us. Which is the best part.”
“How is that the best part, Grandpa?”
“It’s the reason why we have hope. Jesus came into this world as a man. He suffered and died so we could spend eternity with Him. All we have to do is trust in Him.”
“I’m so glad He did that for me. I pray all the time that Daddy will accept Him one day.”
Grandpa reached over and patted David’s shoulder. “I do, too.”
