I had avoided him for many years, but the time had come to face him. He called to me, “The time is now. I am at your door.” The roar of an engine echoed his command.
Nothing he gave me lasted. So I would ask for more, deepening my debt each time. The more he gave me, the more I wanted; until nothing could satisfy my soul.
I ran out the back door, down the alley and onto a dirt road that seemed to have no end. The roar of the engine followed me, becoming louder as I ran. The dirt made my feet unsteady. But I kept running, desperate to escape.
Tired and weary, the road finally brought me to the small town of Chapel where I hoped to find rest.
“There’s only one way.” The gentle voice came from an elderly man sitting on a porch in front of a rundown building. A tattered hat tilted over his brow just enough to hide his eyes. His clothes were ragged and torn, his boots adorned with holes and broken laces.
“Many pass through this town looking to escape the one who seeks to devour. But there’s only one way. An unseen bridge crosses the ravine to the palace of the King. Those who enter became heirs alongside His son. You will find everlasting safety there. But you must go now.” I listened intently, but wondered if someone as broken as this old man could really know the way to safety.
“Two large oak trees mark the way. When you find them follow the stream until you come to a rocky path of red stones. Look carefully, not everyone can see it. Only those who truly search will find it. The path will lead you to the edge of the cliff, to the unseen bridge. It is the only way.”
The roar of the engine screamed from behind me. “Go now!” The old man’s voice was stern, but loving. Despite his appearance, I trusted him and began to run in the direction he was pointing.
The twin oaks were easy to find. They were strong pillars welcoming me. The stream was mighty and the water moved swiftly. I slowed to search for the rock path that would guide me to the bridge.
A rush of relief overcame me when I found it. The rocks were stained red and blended into the dirt of the earth. As I walked down the path, it became enlarged and smooth under me; my feet did not slip. The roar of the engine began to fade, and I was certain the man was unable to find the pathway to follow me.
The path disappeared over the edge of the ravine. I could clearly see the castle on the other side. The walls were high and shimmered like gold. A pearl gate was open as if the King were waiting to welcome someone.
As the old man had told me, the bridge could not be seen. I looked around me, hoping to find some other way. In the distance, I could see the man who had been following me standing on another bridge, calling me. It was wide and looked solid. Many others were crossing over. They looked safe. They looked happy. But I knew he would be waiting for me.
I closed my eyes and stepped out off the cliff, my feet landing firmly on the unseen bridge. As I walked further out across the ravine, I noticed someone watching from the other side. As soon as he saw me, He came toward me, running with open arms. He had been waiting for me. And I knew I was saved.
