Meri-Sue’s life was truly unique and beautiful. She was an affectionate mother and an attentive adoring young grandma. Meri-Sue was a loving wife. She was a warm, gentle and trusted friend. Meri-Sue was a friend of God and a devoted follower of Christ. She had fought cancer with grace, honor and hope for three and a half years. Even in Her last days she made her way to the house of God to worship her Lord and Savior.
At her service there were lively worship songs followed by a time of open tribute to the beautiful life of Meri-Sue Duncan. Meri-Sue was not a public figure. She was quiet, gentle and prone to being in the background instead of the front-stage. During the time of tributes the power of the home group was revealed.
One by one her small group family spoke of the profound impact of Meri-Sue in their lives. Over the years they had wept together; laughed together; studied God’s word and applied it to their lives; prayed for each other’s children, marriages, losses and issues; together they had reached out to needy families; encouraged each to live out their faith in the marketplace of life and changed each others world.
Ecclesiastes 7: 2-4 states, “It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, because a sad face is good for the heart. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.”
Here was the obvious lesson; a home group can have an impact in this life and into eternity. Meri-Sue’s wise words, encouraging thoughts, prayers and self-less love for her friends is part of her eternal rewards.
Do you want to be part of something bigger then yourself? Do you want partnership, real relationship, friendship, bible study collaboration, prayer partners, marriage encouragers, and co-laborers in the mission-field called life, dinner guests, a shoulder to cry on and a place to laugh and a healthy place where everybody knows your name? Then find yourself a home group and fall in love with a spiritual family.
