It was a new year for Noah and his family. Noah looked and the ground was dry. The waters were dried up and now he could venture off the ark and explore new territory. Places where he had never before set foot and all things were new. The wicked had been destroyed just like the Lord had warned Noah. This was what Noah had been prepared for and now he was ready to start anew.
It was a New Year.
Carrie was a new Christian and, as she read about the newness Noah saw in his earth, she felt a deep urging within her to make her New Years resolution. It was something she had been praying about and just like Noah she felt she was exploring new territory.
"What should I resolve toward in this new life within this New Year?", she wondered.
Her mother was beginning a diet and her brother was going to set aside so much per month for missions. Carrie was not overweight and neither did she have a job, still being in the 6th grade. What could she resolve?
She thought about her school work and trying to excel more at that, but she was already a top notch student.
"Oh well", she mused. She would consider it more in class and if she didn't get a move on from her morning devotions, that often her mom had to help her with, she would be late. She set down her Bible and picked up her school books.
"Bye mom", she yelled as she headed for the school bus.
Standing at the bus stop she thought about New Years and resolutions a little more, and then decided she needed to just concentrate on getting to school.
She stepped aboard the yellow bus when it pulled up and found a seat close to the front. She didn't like riding in the back of the bus because some of the boys back there liked to pick on Shy Stella.
Shy Stella was a girl in Carrie's home room class. Carrie could not remember a time in the whole 6 years she had gone to school when the boys and many girls had not picked on Shy Stella.
Shy Stella would hang her head and cower under all the laughs and taunting. Shy Stella had asthma and couldn't play rowdy or even get upset without having to get out her medicine. It was encased in a little instrument that Stella puffed on when she felt an attack coming on. The medicine seemed to make the boys laugh even more gleefully. "Puff, Shy Stella, Puff", they would laugh. Stella seemed to get even more shy and backward as each year progressed.
No, Carrie didn't want to go close to the back of the school bus where the boys were picking on Shy Stella. Carrie glanced back at the girlish distressed look on Stella's face, and took a seat as far from her as she could find.
As Carrie thought more on her resolution the bus took many turns and stops. People got on and took seats. The laughs and giggles from the back continued. Carrie tried to shut them out as she thought about her resolution but the laughs seemed to get louder and clearer in her ears.
By the time the bus made it's final stop in front of the school Carrie had made up her mind. She sat in her seat and let many others get off in front of her, until she saw Stella moving toward the door.
"Hi, Stella, can I walk with you to home room class " Carrie said.
That particular morning bus ride had been tough, but the Lord had helped Carrie make her resolution. A resolution to make new friends.
There was one specific friend to make for certain. Maybe tomorrow Carrie could sit with that new friend on the school bus.
