In France recently I bought a book of French songs so we had a hilarious time bowling down the Route National singing such ‘French’ favourites as Davy Crockett and ‘She’ll be coming round the mountain’ The latter becomes ‘Elle descendu la montagne’ if you want to try it.
My experience of mountains is that coming down is if anything harder than going up. You’ve had all the exhilaration, the views, the fresh mountain air, but now you’re tired and there isn’t much waiting for you at the bottom. Certainly nothing new. Just the same old routine. And it seems more dangerous. You can slip and slide and it is further to fall onto your face when the mountainside is behind you. But down you must come.
I am reminded of a friend’s reaction after hearing a sermon about the transfiguration. You will remember that the disciples wanted to build shelters so that the wonderful experience could be prolonged. But it wasn’t to be. The story is in Mark 9 and the sermon was concerned only with the first part of the story. ‘Great’ said Jim. ‘but no one was healed until they came down to earth.’ He got it just right. It is in everyday life that we most often see Jesus at work and it is in the everyday encounters that we can most often work for Him.
Our ‘holiday’ in France was in fact a total immersion experience. Everything we did was in French including eating French food with French people. We were working to support a small church in Brittany. But now we are back – an d opportunities for service abound. I just have to keep my eyes open and stay grounded in the faith.
