I eyed all present. Radiant faces welcomed me, so I tiptoed in.
“Yes Lord, you can make changes. We honor you for your goodness, and we continue to make our request known to you because we know you can do remarkable things.” Said, sister Valarie.
Another camper on her way to the dorm joined. Sister Mary took the floor.
“Sisters, I have a problem too. For years, I have been praying for my brothers. They are now in the land of plenty, but they are selfish. We all came from humble beginnings and if any member were in need, they would never help. Oh God, help.” She sobbed.
“Let us pray, O God, our heavenly Father, we come to you on behalf of our sister who needs your assistance now. For years she has been coming to you, Lord, she knows you can solve this problem. You, know all things, the needs of the family so now Lord we come to you in faith asking that you give the brothers hearts of charity. Let them remember where they are coming from and their obligations as members of the family. In Jesus’ name, we break that curse of selfishness”
Sister Joan chimed in:
“In Jesus’ name, we plea for your intervention. We know you care for us women, just like the woman with the issue of blood. She touched you and you instantly responded. It is your will that we prosper just as our soul prospers. Amen.”
Another sister shared.
“I am sister Sonia, wife of Pastor Grey. We have two sons, and both are abroad, doing well. But I have a problem, when I visit one of the families, I feel like an outcast.”
Meanwhile, another sister leaving the lunchroom joined.
We held hands and moved out into a circle.
“Lord, you know about the issues of your servant daughter. I know Lord that this is also affecting your manservant. So, Lord, we ask that you do a work of reconciliation. Your word encourages us to live in unity. We ask that whatever the issue reveal it so that it can be discussed and rectified.”
Another sister continued the petition to God.
“Lord, touch her now, open her eyes and allow her to look into the mirror so she can confess her faults in order to have a conversation in love and with a pure conscience.”
Sister Rosie stepped forward. “My family is comfortable financially, but they have not accepted Christ as Lord and Savior. This is my burden.”
“Bring about healing in the family. Save the family members. Give them saving faith and draw them to you before it is too late.”
“In Jesus’s name.” echoed everyone.
“I am sister Taylor from Calvary church. This is my challenge. God has given me two sons who are gifted. The first desired to study abroad so I gave him the opportunity to do so. But it was at a great cost. I had to adjust my lifestyle in a radical manner. First, I took an early pension I took two bank loans, plus my sister and my mother pooled their resources to help. Whenever we paid his expenses, he would say “I owe you.” He has completed, is married, and is working.
He asked me what I wanted as a gift as he was coming to Jamaica on vacation. I told him a gold bangle. When he came, he told me that he could not buy me the bangle unless he brought one for his wife. I was hurt.”
Sister Levy prayed “Look down on your daughter and comfort her. Give her son an understanding heart and let him realize that he should remember the kindness and the roles the family played in his life. Teach him to give back in Jesus’ name amen.”
This type of intimate sharing and prayers continued until all were served.
We then greeted each other and exchanged contacts.
This annual Women’s Retreat away from the hustle and bustle of urban life onto the mountainous terrain of Kendal camp was like an oasis for rejuvenation. Yes! we enjoyed the activities, but none can take the place of this unscheduled spontaneous season of intimate self-disclosure and prayers under the big tree.
