What??
Could Noah wrap his mind around this? Obviously his faith was strong enough to believe God could do anything, including sending water from heaven. He certainly had enough faith to build a boat the size of a football field.
And on dry land to boot!
Everyone around him thought he was loco, crazy, idiotic, or whatever other term they used in Noah’s day. What they didn’t realize was - they were the idiotic ones. Stupid for not believing Noah when he told them God was about to destroy all wickedness from the earth, including mankind. Some of the saddest words in the Bible come from Genesis 6:6, “So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.”
Wickedness breaks the heart of God.
Noah continued to build, and when the boat was finished, God brought all the animals to Noah, loaded them in the boat along with Noah and his family, closed the door and then sent them sailing.
The rains fell, and fell, and fell.
One can only imagine what that forty day adventure must have been like. Did they chant “rain, rain, go away”.
Finally the day came when the rains stopped, they landed on dry ground, and God told Noah to release the animals and leave the boat.
God made a covenant with Noah that day. He told Noah, this will be my sign to never destroy the earth with a flood again - a rainbow will appear in the sky.
Imagine Noah’s reaction when he saw the rainbow. Something no one had ever seen before. A beautiful arc of brilliant colors reaching from one end to the other. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. A beautiful sight to behold.
Did Noah stand gawking in awe and wonder as he gazed at this amazing sight?
Did he say, “Wow God! You really create some beautiful art.”
Today, when I see a rainbow I am filled with awe and wonder. I am reminded of the promise God made to Noah. To me, there is nothing more beautiful in all of God’s creation than the rainbow which graces the sky after a rain. Looking upward into the heart of God, seeing his smiling face as I behold this alluring wonder.
Think about what this earth looks like to God from his throne in heaven.
Let me rephrase this.
Think about what people look like from God’s perspective as he sits in heaven. Isaiah 40:22 says, “God sits above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to him!” Can’t you just picture God sitting on his throne, all these beautifully colored “grasshoppers” going about their business here on earth. God created a variety of people in a variety of colors and he enjoys watching them from his royal seat on high.
He does not see black or white.
He does not see red or yellow.
(Remember the song you probably sang as a child….Red and yellow, black and white. All are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world).
God sees a beautiful rainbow of people. They are his delight. We can choose to bring God joy by our actions (as Noah did) or we can choose to bring God disappointment (as humankind did during the flood).
God loves us all, red and yellow, black and white.
If we have given our heart to Christ through faith in the work he accomplished for us at Calvary then we can claim the verse found in Ephesians 2:10. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
What kind of masterpiece are you? What color are you adding to God’s Rainbow to make it more brilliant here on earth?
