What was it that was finished? Jesus’ life? No, rather it was the mission that He was sent to earth to accomplish that was completed. Born to die for the forgiveness of all sin for all people, His mission was finished but His resurrected life was just beginning. He paid the debt that we incurred by choosing our own way over God’s way. That is what was finished.
His death, burial and bodily resurrection opened the way for us to be right with God. It is a free choice for everyone. We either keep our sins and the penalty for them or we accept His payment for them and go free. It is that simple!
Because He finished it, we can never add anything to what He did as a requirement to be right with God. Salvation from our debt of sin is not of works so that we cannot boast about how we did it. Some turn to “another gospel”, but they have forsaken their own mercy and remain in their sin. Anything added to, taken away or elaborated on as necessary for salvation nullifies what Jesus did. Yes, it is finished. We have only to believe.
Pray with me: “Jesus, I believe You paid the debt that I owed because of going my own way. Please forgive me and help me to live for you.”
