A QUARTER MILE beyond our garden fence, incessant traffic rushes down the A40 dual carriageway.
A neighbour is mowing his lawn.
The gardener doing his weekly work for the lady next door, has his radio on for hours.
Yesterday, just up the hill, someone had a party.
In a few weeks’ time we’ll have 3 or 4 days of the annual ‘Fest’!
Most of the man-made sounds we hear today are far from pleasing to my ears.
From an early age I enjoyed melodies with a gentle and often plaintive tone.
Many years ago on an RAF camp in the Far East, I walked past the NAAFI refreshment building. Someone was playing the gentle beginning of Beethoven’s ‘Fur Elise’ on a piano. It was a very soothing experience in that hot and humid climate. It fed my soul. Precious.
Today, generally speaking, my kind of music seems to be very scarce.
However, our Maker is always sending even better sounds out of his beautiful Creation. It is springtime, and our British songbirds are well into their courtship and nesting activities. What human wind instrument can make such a pure sound as the flute-like song of the blackbird?
What man-made gadget less than 3 inches long and weighing very little, can make a volume of sound equal to the song of a tiny wren?
Then there’s the song-thrush with its beautiful unique series of repeated melodies.
The skylark may only be a speck in the blue, but it can pour its perfect song down to us for ages.
The busy chatter of a small flock of jackdaws is a chorus to my ears.
Many other sounds can also feed our souls.
Enjoy the relaxing swish of gentle waves on a pebble beach.
Enjoy a soft breeze in the leaves of a birch tree.
Enjoy the contented buzz of bees collecting pollen from a clump of flowers.
Every sound in creation is composed by our glorious Maker to nourish our hearts, minds, and souls. They are His vast manuscript of melodies to draw our attention to Himself. Praise his Name.
So, shut your ears to the devil’s compositions, and when you can, move out into Creation and listen to God’s!
“For you shall go out with joy,
And be led out with peace;
The mountains and the hills
Shall break forth into singing before you,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12
