There were no longer guards at the border. It was now an open border. It was a lonely stretch of road that lay before me.
It began to rain as I walked out into the looming darkness. I was glad I had taken my umbrella.
I had walked this road before a few times during the day, and even then I was nervous. Once I saw a car parked on a side road near the border crossing. “Why is this car parked there? What are they doing here? Who are they waiting for?” My thoughts raced. Another day, a car was parked on the side of the road ahead of me in the distance. “Lord, please be with me; please help me,” I prayed fearfully, knowing I would have to walk past the car. It was me and the occupant(s) of the car in this wilderness! All of a sudden, I saw a car in the distance coming closer and closer, passing the car, speeding on towards me. It came to a halt beside me! It was the woman I lived with! “How did you know I was praying for help?” I asked in unbelief. “I guess the Holy Spirit sent me,” she replied. She rarely picked me up.
The rain was now pelting my umbrella, coming down hard. All I could hear was the roar of the rain. My shoes were filled with water. I felt sick with worry and anxiety as I approached the border crossing, remembering the car that was sitting on the side road near there during the day. “Lord please be with me; please protect me,” I prayed. “What will I do if I see a car approaching in the distance?” I wondered. Thoughts of drug deals and other criminal activities sped through my mind. I imagined myself running into the ditch and hiding among the trees, crouching close to the ground so no one could see me.
Thoughts of another similar situation drifted into my mind that reassured me of His Presence. I lived in the outskirts of Geneva at the time, had attended a seminar downtown and needed to take a bus home. I got off the bus at 11:00 p.m. I dreaded leaving the well lit street to walk into the darkness of a forested area to reach my home, with only the moon overhead to light my path. I was afraid. I could hear noises, twigs snapping, the sounds of the forest at night. It’s amazing what goes through one’s mind at a time like this! Was it someone evil lurking in the darkness, slowly coming towards me; was it more than one? I fearfully tried to reassure myself “It’s only an animal”. “Lord please be with me; please protect me!” I prayed over and over.
Then I saw the light of a cigarette on the path about 20 feet ahead of me! Someone was walking towards me! I cried out to God “How could you allow this, I asked you to protect me?” I braced myself for whatever could happen. It was my neighbor walking his dog! I repented. “Lord, please forgive me for not trusting You.”
The rain began to subside to a drizzle as I walked towards the twinkling lights of the village where I lived. I felt hope. Never have I been so happy to see it! The worry, fear and anxiety slowly began to leave me as I turned into the entrance of the village, and onto the nearby street where I lived.
“Thank you Lord,” I whispered, as I unlocked the door and stepped inside, breathing a long sigh of relief. Once again He had protected me.
