Every now and then this telling little picture appears on my newsfeed. On the right is a little girl holding her tiny teddy bear tightly in her arms and saying, “but I love it, God”! Jesus, on His knees to the left is extending His right hand to her and saying, “just trust me”. What she does not see is that He is holding a huge teddy bear in His left hand behind His back. She can’t have the big one until she gives Him the little one. But she loves her little one. She is having real trouble giving it up, especially when she does not know about the big one behind His back.
Do we think that maybe she wants to keep her little teddy bear more than she wants what Jesus offers her? Maybe she doesn’t think what He is offering is better than what she is holding on to. Maybe she thinks He has nothing for her and if she gives up her beloved little teddy bear that she will be all alone. Or, do we think she wants both? That’s how we are, isn’t it? We love our lives and our stuff, but we want the good things that Jesus has for us as well. How can we stand with one foot in the world and one foot in the kingdom? Did not Jesus tell us that in order to find our lives we had to lose them?
So many times, I have failed: I have looked back wanting what has been crucified with Him yet at the same time wanting Him with all my heart. You too, right? Yep, it is no secret that we have all done this over and over again. I am so thankful that He forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases. Because of Jesus, and only because of Him, we can step forward and put that lagging foot into the kingdom. We can be “all in” with Him. He will give us the grace to lay down our little teddy bears so that we can receive all the love, joy and peace that He has for us. Let’s do it!
