Monika and Siobhan got into Monika’s car. They were leaving Thanksgiving dinner at Monika’s parents’ house. Neither said anything. Monika started the car and drove around the corner – out of sight of her parents’ house. She turned off the car. Siobhan looked at her but didn’t say anything.
Monika pounded the steering wheel and screamed at the top of her lungs. “Aaaaahhhh!â€
Siobhan’s eyes opened wide. She had never seen this side of her housemate.
“I’m sorry, Sio.â€
“My parents. The way they … the way they complain about everything.†Tears rolled down her cheeks. She let out a heavy breath. “The way they criticize each other and everyone and everything around them.â€
“The way nothing is ever good enough.â€
“Were they like that when you were growing up?â€
Monika looked out the windshield into the darkness before them. She nodded.
“So nothing, including you, was ever good enough?†Siobhan asked.
“Yeah, but it’s more than that.†Monika paused. “It’s a dark cloud that overshadows their lives and everyone else’s.â€
Siobhan leaned her head back. “Like a vortex of ingratitude that sucks the joy out of everything,†Siobhan whispered.
Monika furrowed her brow and looked at the ceiling of the car. “Vortex of ingratitude?†she chuckled.
Siobhan laughed and glanced back at Monika. “Weird, huh?
“Yeah, but true.â€
“My family is the same way,†Siobhan reflected.
Monika smiled sadly. “That explains why you were unfazed by … the vortex of ingratitude.â€
“Unfortunately,†Siobhan agreed.
They sat silent for a few minutes.
“It’s hubris, you know,†Siobhan broke the silence.
“Complaining. It’s hubris.â€
Monika thought a moment. “How so?â€
“Complaining is saying things aren’t good enough, right?†Siobhan asked.
“Right,†Monika concurred.
“If we believe that God is sovereign, complaining is saying God’s doing a bad job.â€
Monika opened her eyes wide. “Ouch.â€
