The parable of the sower is multi-layered with meaning. Jesus called it foundational to understand how the kingdom of God works in this world of which Satan is prince. I used to think the sower was the preacher and that also true. A more personal meaning is this: The seed is the word a believer plants in the good soil of his own heart.
There are a total of forty-four verses in the New Testament where the Greek word “sperma” is translated “seed.” This is the same word from which we derive our English word “sperm.”
To conceive and reap the harvest, I must first plant God’s Words like a seed in your heart. Conception cannot take place without first planting the seed. And the more seed I plant, the greater the harvest. He who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly.
Faith only comes one way, by hearing and hearing and meditating on the Word. Christians who pray and believe for God’s intervention but remain frustrated with the results often are missing the seeds of conception. They don’t know God’s word, or they hear it once and allow the fowls of the air (doubt) to steal it. Or they lose their harvest by allowing cares of this world to occupy their time and neglect the word.
Words are seeds and seeds produce like things. Like produces like, each after its own kind (Gen. 1: 11). When I woke one morning with a dizzying nausea, I wanted to stay in bed. Instead I chose to praise God and speak His word in Exodus 23-25, He takes sickness away from the midst of me. I held to the bars of my treadmill and started walking as usual. Soon all symptoms disappeared, praise God. My harvest came!
