“Maybe we should give them another five minutes?” he answered.
“It seems strange they are not coming to their door. They didn’t tell me they were leaving for a few minutes. They didn’t let us know where they went or when they would be back. Shouldn’t that be a concern?”
“The TV is on and lights are on in the kitchen and living room. They’ll be back soon,” he replied.
“Maybe, they just left them on to look like they were home. What if they made a quick dash to the store and got in a car wreck?”
“Stop that. We don’t know. We can pray everything is alright. Do you have your key to get in your brother’s house?”
“No. I left it at home. We’ll have to sneak in.”
“Are you crazy. What if a neighbor sees us and calls the police or we get shot at?”
“We have to do something. My brother might be hurt. Besides, I made his favorite pecan pie. If I leave it on the porch a critter might come and eat the whole thing.”
“Let’s just wait another ten minutes.”
“He could be dead in ten minutes.”
“What was the last text message you got from Richard?”
“He said he would be home in 20 minutes, but that was an hour ago.”
“I’m calling Wayne, our older brother. He should’ve been here by now. “Hello, Wayne, Richard is not here at his house. Do you know where he is?””
“I’m five minutes away, Sheila. Don’t worry, Rick can take care of himself. Just sit tight.”
Bill turned to me, “That’s it. Let’s just sit in the car until everyone shows up. I’m calling my brother Sam to make sure he is on the way, too. “Sam, Sheila and I are at Richard’s house. Are you going to show up anytime soon?””
“Yeah, we’re behind Richard right now. Donna picked up some chicken. It seems like he has something in his truck with him.”
“It should be his wife.”
“No, it’s something with a long tail.”
“Oh, my God. We were worried about Richard.”
“Is Jamie there?”
Bill turned to me, “Jamie, my little sister, is coming also with her husband Eddie.”
I turned to Bill, “I thought Richard was sick. I made this pie to cheer him up. What’s going on? Why is everyone coming to Richard’s house?”
“Sheila, there might be a family problem.”
Just then three pickup trucks and a car pulled down the long driveway. All the vehicles parked in the grass along the driveway.
When Richard got out, I blurted, “Where have you been? We almost broke into your house. You left the TV and all the lights on.”
Jill, Richard’s wife, got out and hugged me. “Thanks for thinking about us.”
Jamie came over, “Is that pecan pie? It sure looks good. I brought a bowl of potato salad.”
“I made it for Richard. I thought he was sick.”
Richard came to me holding a black retriever puppy. “This is for you, sis.”
“When we all go duck hunting this winter, you’ll have your own dog to retrieve your birds.”
Bill hugged me. “I shoot more birds than you, but we can both train him.”
My mouth dropped wide open as I picked up the puppy. I grinned ear to ear as he licked my face. “I think I’ll name him Shock. As I ‘m definitely in shock right now. You knew I needed a puppy for hunting. How did you find it?”
“Tim Barlow, our neighbor, had a litter of pups. As soon as word got out, I made a pick as soon as he let me. I got the best out of what I could see. The mother had six pups. They were all spoken for after four weeks. I let Shock stay with his mother for another three weeks until your birthday rolled around.
Richard, Jill, Jamie, Eddie, Sam, Donna, Wayne, Bill and I made a circle, and all held hands at the front of the house. As we held hands I asked, “Let’s all bow our heads in prayer, “Thank you God, for a wonderful family gathering and my birthday present, Shock. Please watch over our family with your protection and guidance. Amen.””
