You set yourself up for failure when you show up to a sword fight with a stone. There is no chance that you are going to survive the fight. It is therefore difficult to understand how David got out of a sword fight with a sword and the head of his opponent. He did not take a sword to the fight but came back with one.'
While it looked as though Goliath had weapons to defeat David, he was completely eluded by the weapon that David possessed. David was actually the most prepared and armoured on the battlefield. His weapon was in his heart and thus was invisible to his opponent. David’s weapon was faith in the name of Lord God Almighty (1 Samuel 17: 45). David had changed the dynamics of the fight. It was no longer a fight with swords but a fight between a sword and the name of the Lord of Host. Surely, victory was already on the side of David even before the fight began.
There is one thing to be learnt from this, it's not really about fighting well. It's about believing well. There are many things in this life that we have to face and deal with. For most of these things we don’t really feel prepared to deal with them or much worse, we don’t even know how to deal with them. The challenges we face are like armoured giants before us and we seem powerless to face them.
But its not really about fighting well. Like David, its all about believing well. David believed that the Lord was going to give them victory. It was his faith in the power and ability of the Lord to kill the giant that brought the victory not the stone. The name of the Lord is still as powerful as it was in the days of David, but we can only experience its power at work if we believe in the name. David could have gone there with a sword and could have still lost. Victory is not guaranteed with a stone or a sword, its guaranteed with faith in the name of the Lord who created the Heavens and the earth. Faith a powerful weapon to carry in our hearts as we face any challenge.
It is the secret weapon that eludes our opponents and brings us victory. Believe well, that’s all you need to do to bring down the giant as you go down on your knees to pray. This is how you believe well. You remember before whom you live and kneel. The Lord, strong and mighty. The God of wonders who has all power and authority and is able to do all things. The God who is good and more willing to give you victory than you are eager to have victory. The God who needs no consultation and never looses in battle. The Lion of the tribe of Judah who does not retreat before any. This is the One before who you kneel to pray and the One who watches over you.
The victory is not for the strong or the well prepared, it's for the one who believes well. We know this is true because, with a stone, David killed a giant (Genesis 17:50). May every giant in our lives fall as we pray and believe. We have everything to fight the battles in this life only if we would believe. May the Lord help us to have faith in Him in spite of the challenges we face. There is nothing too difficult or impossible for our Lord.
