“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:14 NKJV)
I know that I can win this prize only by yielding my total being to Him. He must be my all in all. Life has been likened to a race. Again, the Word expresses my heart:
“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown”. (1 Corinthians 9: 24, 25 NKJV)
To win the race and receive the prize, an Imperishable Crown, I must continue with Him in all that I think, do, or say. Another crown is the Crown of Life.
“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
This one I especially want because I truly do love Him. Obtaining it requires that I crucify my flesh with Jesus and that I die daily to my inward sin nature. My sin nature just wants to be fed, comforted and indulged. More crowns are mentioned in scripture.
The Crown of Righteousness, 2 Timothy 4:8, is promised to "those who love and anticipate" the Second Coming of Christ. These Christians desire intimacy with God. That’s me!
The Crown of Glory is discussed in 1 Peter 5:4 and is granted to leaders who "shepherd the flock in unselfish love being a good example to others” as in 1 Peter 5:2-4.
The Crown of Rejoicing is given to people who engage in evangelism of those outside the Church. In the New Testament, Paul earns this crown after winning the Thessalonians to faith in Jesus.
I think these crowns are not for me, but I will cast them at the feet of Jesus when I see Him face to face like the 24 elders in the book of Revelation do. Oh, how I want to do that!
No, nobody ever said this life would be easy! But it is possible to overcome evil and live a godly life in Jesus. I am so grateful for the precious Holy Spirit, Who gives me the power to win the race and claim the crowns for my Savior!
