She felt sure the chapel would be empty since it was very early in the morning. Her hair was a mess and her clothes reeked the smell of alcohol from her night of partying. She hoped no one would ever know she had been there. She was mad and intended to have a showdown with God!
Booze, drugs, partying all night with friends, didn’t take away the pain. Each day the agony pierced her heart and the same question flooded her mind, “How could God let this happen?” Her faith in God had been shattered. She was determined to have nothing to do with religion ever again. You could say that she was going to boycott Jesus and his church!
Tears streamed down her face as she reached the alter. Looking up at the cross she cried out, “Why? I don’t understand. We were good Christians!” Sobbing uncontrollably, she sank to her knees as she remembered yesterday. It was the first anniversary of the accident that took her twin sister’s life! They were both in the car. She walked away unhurt, but her sister died at the scene! The guilt she felt for surviving, had wounded her soul and crushed her heart! Life without her twin seemed impossible!
It was their freshman year in college. They were excited about the young women’s prayer group they had started. Weekly, they met at a friend’s apartment off campus. That’s where they were going when the accident occurred! It had weighed heavy on her heart this past year! One day a friend said alcohol could get her through the bad days, but she knew every day was a bad day! “Here, drink a glass of wine; It will relax you,” the friend said. Never, had a drop of alcohol touched her lips. A battle was raging inside her head, “Drink it; Don’t drink it!” Nothing seemed to matter anymore, so she took that first sip!
Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months. The pain in her heart grew more intense and so did the drinking. It didn’t take long for the wine to stop numbing her, so vodka took its place! Shortly thereafter, this didn’t ease her pain either; that’s when she graduated to drugs!
A year had gone by. She was nothing like the person she used to be! Her lovely skin now showed needle marks from the drugs she’d taken! When she came down from this latest high, the pain had turned to fury! God had betrayed her sister and she was fighting mad! She hated the person she had become and thought about stopping drugs, but something always talked her out of it. “Who cares?” she’d tell herself, “God doesn’t! He wouldn’t have let any of this happen if he cared!” The devil had her right where he wanted her. He was going in for the kill! Just over a year ago she was a witness for Jesus. Satan wanted to make sure she’d never do it again! Screaming to the top of her lungs she fell to the floor, “God, I can’t go on!” Her agony had peeked, and she passed out, or though she thought.
Extreme peace, like the feeling you get when drifting off to sleep, swept over her. She felt intense love with strong arms holding her! A voice told her everything would be alright! Somehow, she knew it was true! God didn’t forsake her; He rescued her that day! He was waiting for her to come to him! God assured her that it all would be worked out for good and she believed!
God shut down Satan’s attempt on her life! Her heart was lighter and her need for drugs ended! She returned to her first love, Jesus!
Life has pain and tragedies that we can’t run from. God doesn’t say we won’t go through them, but he did promise he’d be with us in the storm and bring us through! When your storm is raging run to Jesus! He’s the only one that can bring you comfort in your time of need!
NIV: Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
