My husband doesnt appreciate all the work I do. Never a kind word, thank you, nothing. Just, When will dinner be ready Hon? The guys are coming over to play poker in a while. Then of course, when the poker game is over, I am left with one more mess to clean up.
I quit! I am walking out that door, heading to Starbucks for a coffee break. I wish I had a best friend to call up to join me, but were new in this town and I have had no time to make new friends. Oh, well, the coffee will be a welcome break anyway, even if I have to drink it alone.
A few minutes later I am sitting at a table, drinking my coffee alone, and a nice senior-aged looking lady walks in looking around for a place to sit. There isnt an empty table in the room so I raise up my hand and motion to her that she is welcome to share my table.
Hi there, Im Betty, would you like to join me?
I would love to. I'm ready for a cup of their wonderful tea this morning."
" My name is Mable. I live right down the street at the Senior Residence. Sometimes I just have to get away from those old people and surround myself with some positive thinking young folks.
Well, Mable, Im not so sure I fit that description today. I was so angry I just had to run away from home for a while!
She asked what was bothering me today and I began to unload all my feelings at her feet. I told her I was lonely for friendship, tired of cleaning house all the time and being unappreciated. She smiled a sneaky little smile as I continued to unload.
Well, Betty, I think perhaps you need to think about what you would like to be doing instead of cleaning all day. What do you like to do more than anything in the world?
I thought for a while and then responded, When I was younger I really enjoyed art. I had a wonderful art teacher in High School who introduced us to many mediums of art: watercolors, ceramics, sketching, jewelry making. I really love to draw and paint pictures.
Well, Betty, I think I have the perfect idea to bring some sunshine into others lives as well as your own.
Really, I asked, what would that be?
I believe there are people in the community where I live who would love to try their hands at some art. Why dont you come back home with me and Ill introduce you to our Manager of Activities. I believe she would be happy for you to come and start a class in art for us. I know I would love to take part in something like that. I use to love to paint, too.
I was amazed at the suggestion. This was something I could do that I really love. And I love being around older, wiser people so I went home with Mable and sure enough the Activity lady was happy for me to volunteer to teach a class.
Well, let me tell you, I dont mind my life anymore. I just hurry through my house cleaning each day so I can begin preparing the next Art Class for all my new fiends at Sunshine Acres! Then when Wednesday morning comes around, I am eagerly rushing out the door, and being greeted by all those smiling faces standing there with paintbrushes in hand!
And about the poker nights that use to make me so angryI had a very up-front, straight from the heart talk with my husband. He and his buddies have now learned to throw the beer bottles in the trash, clear off the dishes and put them into the dishwasher. You know what? They even know how to turn the dishwasher to START!
