Silence greeted us as we arrived out on the redwood deck that surrounds the house. Silence as is only heard far away from the city, up at our mountain get-a-way. It was so dark we couldn’t see more than a few feet from where we stood.
The next morning we began the seasonal yard work; raking leaves, pinecones and occasionally a small limb that has fallen and needs to be cut into small pieces.
“Hello neighbor, came the voice of our friend, George, next door. Did you hear all that banging around, along about midnight?”
“Yes, my husband Gary replied, do you know what it was? Sounded like someone was ripping your house apart! And then the dogs started barking like they were scared to death.”
“Well, I suppose they were pretty frightened. There was a really big black bear digging in our garbage can, searching for food. He didn’t find anything since we never put food out in the can until just about time for the refuse truck to come! These bear up here are certainly wild and you must never go anywhere near one. Just call the animal control if you see one. They know how to transport them to a better area, away from residential communities.”
I was so surprised to learn there are bear in this area. I sometimes walk across the street during the evening to visit my friend, Jan. You can bet you bottom dollar I won’t be walking around after dark anymore.
From now on, I will be enjoying the wildlife during the daytime, sitting on the deck. We love to watch the deer as they wonder through, eating the flowers and fruit from the trees. That is as close to wildlife as I care to be!
