Last week when I visited Dad, he seemed so happy to see me. We were having a very nice conversation about life and how things always seem to turn out for the best. And then when he asked me about my job, I replied, "It's going quite well. My boss seems very pleased with my progress on this project and said he is impressed with my skills with clients."
"When is he going to give you a raise, if he thinks you're doing so well? Don't you think it's time for a raise?", he exclaimed.
"Dad, I replied, I have only been working for Get It Right a little over a month."
"Don't make no difference girl, if you are doing a good job, he should give you more pay!".
He continued to go on and on until I wanted to pull my hair out, I was so angry. Or maybe I really wanted to pull his thick, white hair out that he is so proud of!
Then the subject changed to my new boyfriend. Oh, how I hate when that subject comes up. He has never approved of anyone I have dated my whole life! I'm sure this is going to be really good. Can I just walk out and go home? No, he is my Dad and I love him so I have to listen-- once more.
" Hey Nan, you still puttin' up with that creep that only takes you out for hotdogs instead of real food?"
"What are you talking about, Dad? Rod takes me to very nice restaurants. That was only one time we had hotdogs and we were at a ball game, for Pete's sake."
" Well, I don't ever remember you talking about going to nice places for dinner, just hotdog joints" , he responded, with a smirk on his face.
" Do I have to tell you every place I go on a date? You would just have more bad things to say no matter what I told you. Why can't you ever say anything nice to me", I angrily replied.
He bent his head, resting his face in his head and sniffed a bit as if he were crying--no, I thought, shaking my head, Dad never feels bad enough about anything to be crying. He never admits he is wrong.
After a few moments, He raised his head and looked at me, with the most broken look I had ever seen on his face.
"Sweetheart, I am so sorry. I didn't realize I was hurting you with my silly opinions. I would never knowingly do that. I wonder if we could start this discussion over again and if it's alright, I will agree that you are right about the raise. You really haven't worked there long enough to expect it. However, as far as the boyfriend, I want to keep thinking you deserve better than him but if you think he is great then we will just each respect the others right to feel as we do about him. I will try to never put him down again, but if he breaks your heart I might have to go out and break something about him!"
He reached out his arms and drew me close, whispering in my ear, " You are still my baby girl, no matter how old you are and I love you with all my heart."
