A whisper of a voice came soft and muffled from deep inside the house. No, no it can’t be.
“Mama?” Clearer now and accompanied with the patter of three year old feet dissipating my stillness.
“Mama?” The footsteps paused in the kitchen and I held my breath. I glanced at my watch barely moving my body. Nooo, I’ve only had ten minutes. Go find Daddy. Go find Daddy. The glass door clicked and scrapped and then rolled on its runners.
“Mama, I found you,” chirped my bright-eyed, beaming daughter. Clearly hide and seek was a great game to start the day with. A grumble rolled inside but I took a breath and put on a smile.
“Yes, you did,” I replied.
“I had the funniest dream last night, Mama,” she blurted excitedly clambering up on the chair next to me, “Mr Speckles came out of my cupboard all dressed up and meowed at me to open the door and when I did we wasn’t at home. We was at the fair, Mama! And there was lots of lights and rides and funny things to see and I bought some fairy floss from a purple elephant but when I ated it I started floating up in the sky like a balloon and a giraffe had to ride in the big wheel to catch me and then, and then, and then… I was back on the ground but inside a circus tent and Mr Speckles was in the middle ready to make a lion do tricks but when the lion turned around it was Daddy dressed in a lion suit! Ha ha ha ha ha. It was so silly.”
“That is quite a silly dream,” I agreed as she laughed again. Such a wonderful happy sound that injected genuine warmth into my smile.
“Mama? Why are you sitting outside? It’s a bit cold out here.”
“Mm,” I mumbled swallowing another sip, “Well…I’m listening to the sounds of the morning and having a cup of coffee with God before we get on with the day.”
“Oh,” she said. She sat silently a moment, looking about and listening. “It’s nice of God to get up early to have a cuppa with you.” A laugh burst from me.
“Yes,” I said, “yes it is.”
“He’s even got the birds singing early for you,” she chirped. I glanced at the tree in our yard as birds I couldn’t see warbled out a tune and listened to a distant reply. That would be just like you, God.
“I’m going to tell Daddy,” she declared bouncing off her seat and scurrying inside. I reclined a little more, sipped my coffee and listened to the morning song God was orchestrating for me.
