As a three year old, I remember standing on the edge of the pool trying to build up enough courage to jump. It was a new situation for me. The water in the pool seemed too foreboding. It wasn’t like the playground in which I landed on solid ground.
Fortunately for me I jumped into the water and Daddy’s arms lifted me up out of the water. After much sputtering and wiping of my eyes, I celebrated with him. It became apparent to me on that day that Daddy was always there when he said he would be.
Because of Daddy’s love and support, the fear of water abated that day. It was similar to dealing successfully with the imaginary ghosts in my room at night. I could now sleep in peace and have fun at the pool.
Later came that first day of kindergarten. Oh, there was some fear but Daddy’s words of assurance carried me through that traumatic situation with flying colors.
My Daddy’s words of assurance followed me throughout my childhood. Every time some new hurdle in life was set before me, I was able to take them in stride and come out victoriously. Fortunately he taught me well regarding my heavenly Daddy. “I won’t be with you all your life, Son,” he always said. “But your heavenly Daddy will be with you forever.”
I was able to deal with the milestones of this earthly life. But when the big one came along, I found it to be the most challenging. It was that time in which I learned that we need to shed off this life of the flesh and take up the life of the Spirit. It was the time when the Lord showed me the necessity of placing the securities in the background and take up the foundation in Him.
But more than that, I realized that it would be necessary for me to die, like a grain of wheat planted in the ground, so I could take up a new life in the Spirit. I thought of the fear I felt that day at the pool, as a three year old boy. Fear engulfed me but because of Daddy’s words, I was able to overcome and leap into a new experience.
At that time, I heard my heavenly Daddy say, “It’s okay. I am here. Take that leap into the realm of my Spirit, a life that you can’t define or control but is glorious. Be assured that my face is loving, my hands are strong and my word is true.”
Do I really believe that life after this one will be glorious and free? I am proud to give an affirmative answer to that question. My heavenly Daddy’s words ring out in my heart. “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life.” (John 8:36)
