The shiny orb distracts and strokes the eyes
Of perfect man and wife in Eden's bliss.
Forbidden fruit among the many given,
So ordinary, and yet not quite the same.
Would this mere food when eaten, make one wise?
How could delicious fruit cause man's demise?
And Satan quietly waits, saliva streaming,
Poised, ready to devour the plan of Heaven.
Delicious lips call to a man whose flesh
Responds unguarded to seductive sway.
With painted eyes she calculates each move,
Sows fragrant petals on her lap of death,
Like spinning spider, weaves his hair with lies.
Draws Samson's will away, and then his power.
And Satan waits, wipes honey from his mouth,
Makes ready to defeat the blinded foe.
From humble clan to God-anointed king
Stands head and shoulders above the common man.
Delicious pleasure flames his earthly frame,
The throne, the wealth, the praise, the bowing hordes.
Forgets his low beginning and his call,
To trespass holy boundaries of God's altar.
And Satan, shoulders back, with head held high,
Sword drawn, awaiting Saul's last prideful fall.
Cloaked, Satan hovers low, inspects his brew,
Blends greed with lust, infuses it with pride,
The kneaded loaf, his finest masterpiece.
Delicious bread from stone would glut His flesh.
Protection from a fall, would swell His pride.
Great kingdoms of the world would draw his eye.
But us in mind, our Lord refused the bait,
And Satan waits, foresees his own demise.
