“Can we include a stop for a sandwich? I am starved and I have heard so much about the famous New York sandwiches,” Leilani replied.
Flashing a smile Alicia grabbed her purse and locked the door all in one fluid motion saying, “Sure thing. I know just the place.”
Twenty minutes later the new friends were seated in a local café having ordered coffees, a doughnut, sandwiches with fries, and a slice of cheesecake.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said you were hungry. Are you sure we can finish all this?” Alicia teased.
Not quite catching that her friend was teasing, Leilani was serious in her response. “Of course. This being my first trip to the big city I want to experience all it has to offer. After all, I come from a small island and who knows when I will be over this way again.”
The jelly doughnut was the first to arrive and as she licked her fingers one by one Leilani, with a dreamy look in her eyes, said “Now that was ono.”
Puzzled, Alicia reached for her coffee and added her customary two sugars and a drop of cream choosing to ignore Leilani’s statement.
Reaching now for her hazelnut latte Leilani gingerly lifted it to her lips and being extra careful with the hot foam slowly took a sip. “Ono.”
Alicia started to ask her companion a question but was cut off by the arrival of the ham sandwiches and home-style fries. Leilani’s eyes widened and she squealed with excitement “Now those look so onolicious!”
Not able to take it anymore Alicia put down her sandwich mid-bite and finally confronted Leilani with the loaded question, “What does ono mean?”
Surprised but still not missing a beat Leilani exclaimed, “Why delicious of course! That is how we say it in Hawaii!”
The two friends finished off their meal with slow bites of their shared piece of New York style cheesecake, clicked their forks together, and said simultaneously through their giggles, “Now that was ono.”
