Based on the coolers in the supermarket, the gallon size containers of chocolate milk gave the appearance that most people like it. I have indulged in many glasses of its richness in days gone by.
The simple recipe to make it involves a tall glass of milk, all the chocolate syrup desired squeezed in, stirred until fully blended, and then enjoy.
This can be equated to a spiritual formula. The glass of milk represents us. The chocolate syrup symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Once a spoon is used, to swirl and unite the syrup with the milk, then the Holy Spirit comes alive. We need to be receptive to the blending of this bold presence with our bland humanity.
This chocolate milk concept is useful to help kids grasp the Holy Spirit if you're looking for a quick lesson—call it Holy Spirit milk. The Holy Spirit's effect on us cannot be reduced to a glass of chocolate milk. This is merely a physical example of something intangible.
On the topic of intangibles, I had an incredible encounter with the Holy Spirit while on a Joy of Healing Retreat about fifteen years ago.
I was using a bone stimulator machine for an ailing left arm and shoulder, so it came with me to the retreat. I was doing whatever I could to avoid surgery.
It was during the evening encounter with Christ where my intangible experience took place. Never having been "charismatic" when it comes to my faith, I saw people falling all over the place; I felt like a spooked squirrel looking for possible danger signs.
I prayed, "God, please don't let that happen to me. Keep me from falling down. I'm sure you have other ways for me to feel your presence."
When the lay minister prayed over me, an intense burning crawled from the soles of my feet to the top of my head. I could hardly stand with the heat's intensity. Now I understood why people were falling down. The lay minister exclaimed, "You're on fire!"
This burning sensation lasted the entire time she prayed over me—about ten minutes. At first, I didn't get what it meant. Then it dawned on me. The living presence of Christ stirred within me—as if he stepped into my body, through the power of the Holy Spirit. The searing heat was a physical sign of his glorious presence.
God allowed me to remain standing even though the heat was almost unbearable. I was determined to stay upright, afraid of additional injury to my body, and possible surgery.
What a blessing I received from the Holy Spirit. I was more satisfied than if I drank a gallon of chocolate milk.
When I find myself on hot pavement, the heat rises into my shoes. I recall his living presence swirling within me reminding me of how richly blessed I am. What a treasure I have from this awesome experience of Christ moving within me.
Thank you, Holy Spirit for revealing to me an unforgettable physical sensation that I consider sacred.
They said to each other, “It felt like a fire burning in us when Jesus talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us.” –Luke 24:32 NCV
