A dozen questions ran through her mind, but mostly she just wondered if they’d go for a ride. It would be the only thing that would make being there worth it.
Still deep in thought, she brought her elbows onto the table and her hands folded together in front of her face. Her daydream was broken when one of the kids giggled and asked, “What, are you praying?”
Embarrassed by all the glaring eyes, she quickly brought her hands back down to the table and said, “No.”
Years went by. In some ways they had crawled, but in others they’d flown, almost as quickly as she imagined flying away on the back of one of those maned creatures.
Now she was grown and married and had a little boy of her own. She wanted more for him than she had, more than to stare longingly through windows and wonder about another kind of life.
It was a crisp Sunday morning and the three of them were on their way to church for the first time together. She stepped over the threshold of the unfamiliar building, and suddenly something unknown, yet somehow known, enveloped her.
They sat down. As the music began to play, hands around them rose into the air and tears fell down her face. She hadn’t known it, but the time she sat at the lunch table with folded hands staring through the window, God had heard her heart. He knew her longing to be set free.
Though she’d denied Him, He was with her all those years, having set her on a path that took her straight to Him and to freedom. She didn’t get there on a horse, but on the wings of the grace of God, and now she’s more free than she ever imagined.
