I so enjoyed your last letter. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to get me caught up on all the news from back home. It sounds like you and papa are enjoying your "empty nest" with Derrek and I both away from home right now. Don't get too used to it though, for I shall be home in a less than a year! Thank you for the encouraging words to continue studying hard and using my time wisely. I am so thankful you encouraged me to come to America and I promise I will make you and papa proud.
I recently found a wonderful church that welcomes all people, even if their English is as poor as mine! The pastor and his wife are from Sweden and they have been ever so helpful introducing me to other Christian foreign exchange students. I hope to meet someone from Norway soon. I so miss having a conversation with someone in my own native language. It would be so comforting to understand what people are talking about and, it would be nice if they could understand what I am trying to say. I shall keep "plugging away" as the Americans would say.
My host family is a wonderful, patient, and kind family. I wish you could meet them in person, I think you would really like them. Mr. and Mrs. Folders have been teaching me how to "hail a taxi" and "board a bus." It is not easy to get around New York City so it is important I pay attention and learn how to do things properly.
One of the words we were given this week in our English class was the word (fold). Mama, did you know that the word fold is used in more ways that just folding a sheet or a napkin as we would say or use in our language? For instance, I was helping my "exchange sister" make a cake and she said we should "fold" 2 eggs into the batter gently. I must have looked at her strangely because she burst out laughing and explained that the word fold can be used in many different ways. Folding an egg simply means not beating the batter too hard. Recently I was introduced to a young man named Joe and then in the same breath someone in the group said they needed a "Cup of Joe". I guess a Cup of Joe means a cup of coffee. I wonder why they simply can't say a cup of coffee?
It seems I must become a "sentence detective" on a daily basis to understand what people are talking about. Can you believe there is a song that goes something like this; "You gotta know when to fold them and know when to hold them?" Now, what they are holding or folding, I have no idea, but it sounded strange to me. Someone said last week that one of the Presidential Front Runners might quit or "fold." Odd people, these Americans. I hope to someday understand what they are trying to say.
Well, enough complaining for now. I am having a grand time in New York City and most of all, I love the close relationship I have with Jesus since coming to America. I am glad He understands me in any language. I want to be someone who hears His voice and follows Him into the sheepfold as our pastor preached about on Sunday.
Your loving daughter,
Folda
