“Good evening, “said a cheerful voice as they made their way to the front desk. “How may I assist you fine folks?”
“We are here on a week-long vacation and need a room,” Fred replied.
“OK. Let me get my check-in sheet and we’ll see if we can get you a nice room for the week. Now, would you like smoking or non-smoking?”
“Non-smoking,” Martha said.
“No cancer sticks.” She put a check mark on the sheet. “Do you have any pets?
“No.”
“No tail waggers”. She added another checkmark. “May we give you a wake-up call in the morning?”
“Yes, we would like to get up around 9:00 am.”
“Yes to a rooster crow at nine o-clock,” she puts a checkmark on each day of their stay. “Will you be entertaining guests in your room while you are here?”
“No, it’s just the two of us.”
“No freeloaders. Well that’s it for the check list, now I just need your car license number and your payment.”
Fred pulls out his credit card and hands it to the clerk.
“I’m sorry, we don’t have the ability to accept credit cards yet, but cash or a check will do just fine.”
“I guess we can do that,” he said. He glances at Martha knowing she was probably thinking the same thoughts as he, what kind of old-fashioned motel it this anyway.
“Thank you,” she said, taking his check and handing him the keys. “You will be staying in room 7, the best in the house. Enjoy your stay.”
Martha and Fred turned to head out the door to get their luggage and find their room.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you, donuts and coffee are served in the lobby between 6:00 and 11:00 am. Sorry, we don’t have Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, a sauna or an exercise room. No TV in the rooms either, but we have a great fellowship here in the lobby every evening at seven. We hope you will join us.”
“Well Martha,” he chuckled as they made their way to room down the hall. "I think we are in for an interesting vacation.”
______
“Well good morning Fred and Martha. Are you ready to check out today?”
“We have enjoyed our vacation immensely, said Martha. With the lack of all the modern electronic conveniences, we spent a lot of time talking and just enjoying each other. In addition, the fellowship here in the lobby was the best we have ever experienced. It gave us the opportunity to meet and enjoy other fine folks like you. I hope we can come back someday.”
“We have been blessed to have you here. Just remember, there is always room at the Redneck Inn!”
