Sam in the Middle

Sam was not the apple of his mother’s eye very long. When he was barely three, his mischievous younger brother came bursting onto the scene. He had to grow up quickly because not long afterwards, a cherished sister was born. His older brother was the smart one, his younger brother the cute one. Where did this leave him? He became the quiet withdrawn one, enveloped in his own little world, always a victim because of his sensitivity.

Most of the time, Sam’s life was happy and carefree, that is, until he would commit the unpardonable sin of socking one of his brothers in the eye, which caused his father to spank him. Then a shadow of fear flitted across his white face, as a spanking session with his father was not at all pleasant. Being the middle child was a strain. One or the other, the oldest or the youngest was always upset with him about something, and His clamorous siblings had numerous ways of tormenting him. However, there were also times when there was no bickering, and all were best friends.

He tried to be independent and fend for himself, but it was not at all easy. It seemed to him that he could not claim a single possession as his own. If his younger brother saw it and demanded to play with it, he easily manipulated his mother into making Sam turn it over to him. He had gotten many spankings for not wanting to share.
He so looked forward to the age when he would go to school. He loved making friends and playing with other boys his age. At last, the day came, and for a while it was so enjoyable. However, as the years rolled by, the day to day responsibility of getting up early and coming home with loads of homework became quite mundane. It never ended once it began.

The month of October was nearly gone, the afternoon one of those cool, delightful days, when Sam and his brothers watched television after school, and there it was, a movie depicting a zombie apocalypse. With his strong imagination, he found himself waiting on hordes of zombies to show up. His older brother tortured him staggering about guised as a zombie attempting to take a bite out of his face. He was pale and terrorized, his soul having been tried by many anxieties, when he asked his mom, “What if there is a zombie apocalypse?” He eagerly sought her countenance as this nightmarish matter was of great concern to him. Mom tenderly replied, “First of all, there’s no such thing as a zombie, Sam. However, the Bible says there is going to be an apocalypse.” She explained that an apocalypse was an uncovering of something previously unseen or hidden, dealing with God’s justice. “One day, God will avenge his saints and bring an end to death, evil, and sin. This will be the beginning of God’s kingdom finally being established on earth,” she said. Her words sank deep into his heart as this exceptional, little boy was a star pupil in Sunday school every week
.
Sam was enormously relieved. Next morning he rose early and said his prayers. He couldn't wait to get to school and tell everyone that there would indeed be an apocalypse but not one to be feared or mingled with dread. Lighthearted and dauntless, that is exactly what he did. That afternoon, he and his brothers meandered slowly off the big, yellow school bus, as Mom peered cautiously from her bedroom window. Hopping like a jack rabbit, he came in and calmly told her, “No one believed me.” His story had been disposed of in short order, but Sam appeared indifferent to their persecution, no longer caring about his previous obsession with zombies.

With a brilliant smile, understanding and warm, Mom said, “What about you and I go on a grand adventure, just the two of us? We’ll go out and do something that you want to do, maybe eat pizza and see that movie you've wanted to see. “He did not hesitate to accept. A few minutes later, she heard the sound of Sam’s leaps down the stairs, house shuddering, as he had changed with uncanny swiftness and was ready for his appointment with love, the sort that makes life worth the living.

“Don’t be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32) NIV
