After chastising poor Cletus, Nanibelle plopped down in her captain’s seat aboard the 90-foot sailboat that she and Cletus owned. Nanibelle burst out in laughter, followed by Cletus. Nanibelle was always teasing and just having good fun with her sometimes gullible hubby.
Nani and Cletus had met in medical school and were married soon after. They settled in Portland, Maine, and loved sailing during their off time. After 35 years of practicing medicine as a husband and wife team of Neurologists, they retired and hit the high seas on their 90 foot sailboat that now served as their home.
“Nani, can you head down to the galley and get me a bottle of soda pop, my dear? “Yes, my love, do you want me to open it and drink it for you?” said Nanibelle, with a mixture of sarcasm and love.
The first 3 weeks of the grand voyage were uneventful as the couple made their way from Portland, Maine, to the Azores Islands near Portugal. Cletus kept detailed, but mundane logs.
“Today, Nanibelle threw bread pieces to a group of Dolphins that have followed us for most of the day. Yesterday, we were circled by what we thought were sharks, but they turned out to be larger dolphins.”
However, things got very tense when the couple was intercepted by a crew of pirates. “Cletus, I have been watching that tiny dot on our portside grow larger and larger.”
“I have too Nani. Get the pistol from the starboard bin, but first, let’s pray together.”
“Dear Lord, please provide a shield of safety for Nanibelle and me. We trust that you will protect and keep us safe from any harm
“Nani, let the pistol be. I have to trust the Lord on this one.”
“OK, Cletus, if they take all of the soda pop, you are in deep trouble.” Nanibelle always had a way of making Cletus laugh and relax in tense situations.
Soon the boat pulled beside the sailboat. There were four men in their twenties, all scraggly looking. Their leader quickly boarded the McNasti’s sailboat.
“Do not try to do anything stupid in that it will likely be the last thing you do in this life.” These words came from the motley crew leader, Duncan McKellar.
“I want all of your medical supplies ASAP people! I have a wounded man onboard who will soon die if left unattended.” Duncan tried to talk in a rough voice, but Nanibelle sensed he was not the tough outlaw he pretended to be.
“Young man, my name is Nanibelle, and my husband is Cletus. Before you make another demand, you need to know the following. Cletus and I are medical doctors. Look on the wall, and you will see our credentials.”
Duncan studied their credentials, and became relaxed. “My little brother, Sean, was shot by pirates that tried to board our boat. As we were getting away from them, someone shot him in the shoulder. I have been pressing towels to stop his bleeding. Please help. If you can save his life, we will leave you and your husband alone, and will be on our way.”
Nanibelle gathered all of the medical supplies onboard. After closely examining Sean, she realized that the wound was not that serious. However, he had lost a lot of blood.
“Your brother’s wound is not life-threatening. However, he has been bleeding profusely. I will stabilize him and have him ready for you to take him to Lisbon, Portugal.”
“You will take him to Portugal, and we will follow in close pursuit, so do not do anything stupid.” Commanded Duncan.
“We will gladly take him to Portugal and see to it that he will be in the hands of some excellent doctors.”
Nanibelle assured Duncan that Sean would be in good hands. “Duncan, would you mind Cletus and me praying over Sean?”
“Sure, why not? At this point we will take all of the help we can.”
“Dear Lord, help us to find medical help for Sean. We also ask that you watch after all of Duncan’s crew. Amen.”
In three hours, the sailboat landed in Lisbon, Portugal and Sean was rushed to the nearest hospital. He soon fully recovered.
Nanibelle and Cletus would later write a book about their high seas adventures. Duncan became a life-long friend of Cletus and Nanibelle.
