“Mama!” Jenny squealed as she jumped to her feet sending the kitten flying through the air.
Jenny hugged her mother with joy.
“What’s behind your back, Mama?” Jenny asked.
“Nothing,” Regina replied with a mischievous grin.
“Is it a present?”
Regina held out the small puppy for Regina to see.
“It’s a puppy,” Jenny said curiously. “Whose is it?”
“But I already have Mittens.”
“Now you have Reggie too.”
“What will Mittens think?”
“Let’s find out.”
Regina set Reggie down and immediately he began to run around. Eventually the cat and dog met and smelled each other cautiously. Jenny was anxious, but her mother held her back saying, “Let’s watch and see what happens.”
After a short time the cat and dog were running around playing as if they had known each other forever.
“Mittens,” Jenny said as she walked over and picked her up. “Mittens likes Reggie.”
“Do you like Reggie?”
“Mittens does, so I do too. I didn’t think Mittens would want a dog in the house.”
“Mittens is a smart kitten.”
Jenny put Mittens back down and the cat and dog resumed their play. They ran off together like long lost friends. Jenny began to follow, but her mother put out a hand and held her back.
“What’s wrong, Mama?”
“Nothing. I just want to talk to you about something.”
“Is it bad?”
“No. Come over and sit down.”
Regina and Jenny sat down on the sofa. Regina looked into her daughter’s trusting face and said, “I have big news.”
“What is it, Mama?”
“You are going to have a little brother.”
“I am,” Jenny replied cautiously.
“Yes. How do you feel about that?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve never had a little brother before. I suppose it will be okay.”
“You could be like Mittens.”
“What do you mean?”
“The way Mittens accepted Reggie into the family. You could welcome your little brother in the same way.”
Jenny looked into her mother’s face. She thought deeply about what her mother had said to her. She wasn’t sure what to say. She had never thought about having a baby brother.
“I’m not sure I could be as nice as Mittens.”
“But you could try.”
“I could try.”
Regina and Jenny got up and walked over to where Mittens and Reggie were playing. They both smiled as they watched. After a while Jenny said, “I think I could do it. Mittens is a good example.”
“I think you’ll do just fine.”
Regina hugged Jenny deeply and smiled as Mittens and Reggie continued their play. The two animals were oblivious to the wonderful example that they had set and Regina thought it was so much better that way.
