One tranquil Sunday morning,
The birds were singing praises,
Their songs gave no warning.
The sun was shining brightly,
The heavens smiled upon me,
I savored every moment,
Like a jar of potpourri.
I arrived at my station,
And marveled at the sight,
What sweet angelic faces,
This would be such a delight.
Little Jack with his argyle,
Susie in her Mary Janes,
And a handful of others,
Looking dapper just the same.
I had a great agenda,
The whole lesson planned with care,
A snack, a song, a story,
And end it all in prayer.
I brought them to the table,
And assured them we would eat,
I turned for just a moment,
Then realized my defeat.
Eek! One jumped on my back,
Two others held my legs,
I never saw it coming,
Not even time to beg.
Jack was not so little,
And Susie had a rope,
I had been outnumbered,
It seemed I had no hope.
They tied me to a chair,
And put me in time out,
They even gagged my mouth,
After I let out a shout.
At last they had their way,
A haven without rules,
The teacher had been conquered,
That day in Sunday School.
