The teacher asked her sixth grade class
Write an essay and tell me true
What season brings most enjoyment to you?
Sarah didn’t have to wait
She knew right away what she would say.
The Holidays were her favorite of seasons,
And she could list a plethora of reasons
Sarah wrote fast and furious
This essay was not so curious
She told of her love for bright lights and some tinsel
A tall straight tree was extremely essential.
Everywhere ornaments decorated the yard
Looked like an inflated Christmas card
Sarah loved baking and sharing her treasures
The Holidays brought happiness beyond all measure
On and on she wrote her thesis
But not a word about the Baby Jesus
She kept writing about presents with beautiful bows
How Santa would shake right down to his toes.
She wrote about dreams and what she could expect
To find Christmas morning and gifts she would get
Sarah ended her paper and handed it in
Then sat very quietly with a smug grin.
Tricia was silent as she thought through her list
Of things she could say that would bring her such bliss
When all of her thoughts, in her mind had been gathered,
She started to write, without very much clatter.
She loved the idea that an angel would come
He announced that God would be sending His Son.
To a poor little girl and a world full of sin
Born in a stable, new life to begin
She wrote about shepherds that came to bow down
How wise men from the east, the baby they found.
She told about angels in the skies overhead
And a bright star in the sky, to the stable it led
Tricia wrote how Jesus came to redeem
A world lost in sin, His blood to wash clean
She wrote of the cross, where he suffered and died
Then she told of his burial and coming alive.
She finally stated that this was the reason
For Christmas being her favorite season
She signed her name and gave in her paper
She wondered what affect this would have on her teacher.
The teacher awarded Sarah an “A,”
She praised her highly for what she did say
On Tricia’s paper, “I have to negate
Your paper was good but not appropriate.”
If “Merry Christmas” is inappropriate to say
If we know the reason for this Divine holiday
We should never hold back, stating what we believe,
Lest the world know not Jesus and never receive
