He was short, she was tall. They were both in second grade. She had always been the ugly duckling. Other girls snickered when boys walked by them. Not her, she hung her head and hoped that they would not notice her. He was cute and innocent looking. She had not noticed, ever before. He did not pull her pony tails and she did not stick her tongue out at him. The only thing they had in common was being in the same classroom with the same teacher for ten months.
Valentine’s Day arrived like any other second-grade day. It had the routine anticipation of shoving valentine’s into hand-made paper sacks, enjoying home-made snacks and being allowed to chat in the otherwise whispering quiet classroom. She returned to her desk, after recess. And then it happened. She stuck her hand in her desk to find her English book and a sharp pencil. Her hand touched it, it was not usual for what she kept in her desk. Should she look? Was it a joke or a prank that would leave her feeling mistreated and embarrassed? She slowly pulled it to where she could view it. Still confused and wondering what it could be, she pulled it out a little more. Within plain view, there it was.
Its shiny, bright red paper beamed in the noonday classroom. It was not large at all, but a small heart shaped box. She knew it was a box that normally contains chocolates, but being the victim of teasing before, she did not allow herself to become immediately excited about her secret gift. She carefully peeled back the wrapper to find out the chocolates were there, indeed. And her small clumsy fingers discovered the card attached to the underneath side.
Contained on the card were the words: “Happy Valentine’s Day! Love, Larry L.” Larry was the short boy she had never noticed. She peaked over her shoulder to look for this anonymous friend, he smiled and looked back to his English assignment.
Her heart skipped a beat. For the first time, ever, someone had truly acted interested in her. The thoughts of: Am I worthy? Why did he do this? Is he just being mean? Why would he like me? Will mom and dad be mad? She felt so excited and loved at that very moment. He chose her out of all the other giggling girls that frequently demanded attention at recess. She had no idea that he even knew that she existed--but he chose her.
The short boy moved away, not long after that Valentine’s Day.
She has thought about this experience many times in her life, since second grade. It completely mirrors her relationship she now shares with the Lord.
“The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3, NIV). She thought He did not notice, but He chose her to be His Valentine.
