The one who fed me now has to be fed
Slowly, slowly, spoon by spoon.
No longer chewing politely
In frustration she starts to weep
Feed her patiently
She is my mother

The arms that held me now shake and tremble
Slowly, slowly the footsteps shuffle.
No longer keeping her balance
In fear she seeks a supporting hand
Hold her gently
She is my mother

The ears that heard me cry now dull
Slowly, slowly hear what’s said.
No longer catching the conversation
She quizzically asks you to repeat
Address her kindly
She is my mother

The hands that bathed me now stiff and sore
Slowly, slowly stroke her skin.
No longer keeping the body clean
Struggling to keep her dignity
Wash her tenderly
She is my mother

The eyes that once appraised my clothes
Slowly, slowly strain to see.
No longer choosing garments that match
Carelessly picking her daily wear
Dress her with dignity
She is my mother

This tragic decline is Adam’s curse
Damnation that always blights our lives.
A woman once beautiful now decayed
Longing to be with God her maker.
Receive her with joy, Lord
She is my mother.
