The water cleared of swimmers as though someone had cried “SHARK!”
He headed north and came out of the water like a rocket launched from a submarine. Glistening in the sun he flew at least four times his length before re-entering the water. My heart raced as I fought this enormous prize. He turned south taking line off my reel so quickly I began to run down the beach to give him more slack.
I couldn’t believe what was happening. Living on the Gulf coast of Florida I’d often fished for shark bait before it got dark. Never in my wildest dream did I ever imagine hooking onto a giant Tarpon on a resort beach. Neither did the tourists as they watched in amazement as he suddenly headed west. Reaching the end of my line I’ll always remember the snap, like the crack of a whip, as the sun reflected off the nylon line flying through the air back toward the beach. Almost as if thumbing his nose at me he took one final leap before continuing his journey toward the setting sun.
He got away. He was never mine to begin with, but the memory of that day thirty-two years ago is as vivid in my mind as the day it happened. I remember the adrenaline flowing through my entire system for those few short minutes. If you’re not a fisherman you may not understand. The only thing I can compare that experience to is having some small part in someone’s salvation. The excitement experienced stays with you for years afterward.
Over two thousand years ago, Jesus called seven fishermen and five of various other occupations. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” Imagine the joy these men experienced as they began to spread the “Good News”
of salvation through faith in Christ. If you’re not out there fishing, as we are commanded in scripture, you’ll never experience the indescribable joy of possibly hooking the big one.
