It was hilarious, in retrospect had it not been for the tragedy of circumstances.
This time, it was the glow from the flames of the lighted torches that awakened him. Then he heard the rustling sounds in the foliage and rose up to the crackling noise of many footsteps rushing on dried leaves and twigs. They were here; the ones who had been the topic of discussion for several days now.
They had arrived.
He swallowed hard and gathered quickly, unified with his drowsy brothers around their friend in an effort to form a protective offense.
“But we have authority over them”, he thought, and was relieved to see that the new group had been led in by one of the brethren who immediately came forward and planted a kiss on the cheek of his favorite friend. And behind him, there stood also Malchus, the dutiful servant of Caiphais, the High Priest of the faith of his ancestors.
Everything was going to be all right. But why were the men behind these two bearing swords and clubs? And the others, the world would recognize as soldiers of the great empire, well- trained to destroy resistance.
The adrenaline rushed and he could barely hear what was being said for the pounding in his heart.
“They’re going to kill us!”
His friend was speaking now about how he had taught them all, openly, in broad daylight, so why was this act of terror being done in the dark? His friend peacefully stood his ground, confidently, so despite the tremors, he continued to stand with his brothers.
“We have authority over them, don’t’ we?”
The dagger glistened in the firelight as it swiftly came down and there was blood blackened by the night. A melee broke out and a precious hand reached out through the darkness and touched the one side of the man’s face. Then he was taken and bound up by the thugs and soldiers. They had all fallen back now, the brethren, and retreated into the safety of the night. And it was over. His big brother followed those soldiers and thugs, cursing and swearing, as he had never heard before. Just then one of them grabbed him maliciously by a hem of his garment. Hyped in fear, the slender lad wrestled and turned until he freed himself from the strong arm of the malfeasant.
He didn’t stop running until he was encircled safely in the arms of his brethren who reached out from the darkness, clothed him, and took him to the house of his discipled mother- the meeting-place for the brethren.
Later, he would travel on missionary journeys to Antioch with Paul, Barnabas and his big brother, Peter. Eventually he established the first church in Egypt where he, himself was able to perform miracles. And although he wrote one of the first, if not the first book that documented the good news of Jesus, the Christ, nothing ever so profoundly impressed him as the astounding phenomena surrounding the night he ran through the Garden of Gethsemane naked.
